Smoke alarms are mandatory in all NSW residential properties.
Under the NSW Residential Tenancies Act 2010, Landlords must ensure that smoke alarms are installed and maintained in residential premises in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation (Smoke Alarms).
Smoke alarms are required in all buildings in NSW where people sleep. The smoke alarms must meet the requirements of Australian Standard AS 3786, Smoke alarms. These provisions came into effect on 1 May 2006.
Penalties and fines apply for failure to comply with these laws.
The landlord, tenant or property agent are not permitted to remove or interfere with the operation of a smoke alarm fitted in the rented premises.

Children can become entangled while playing with, or around, a blind or curtain cord if not secured and installed correctly.
According to the ACCC tragically, between one and two children die in Australian homes every year as a result of non-compliant corded blinds and curtains.
This has prompted the need for a new mandatory standard. This standard is in place to reduce the number of deaths and injuries to children from corded curtains and blinds.
